A practical explanation of the technology behind AGPS.

1. What cookies and similar technologies are

Cookies are small text files stored on a browser or device. Session cookies generally expire when the browser session ends; persistent cookies remain for a defined period or until deleted. First-party cookies are associated with the site being visited, while third-party cookies are associated with another provider or domain.

Pixels, web beacons, embedded content, local storage, scripts, and server logs can perform similar functions without storing a conventional cookie. This policy uses “cookies” as a convenient term for these technologies unless a distinction matters.

The precise technologies set during a visit depend on whether the visitor is logged in, geographic location, consent choice, and the WordPress or Jetpack features used. Representative examples include:

When a protected comment or form is submitted, Akismet may receive information such as the submitter’s IP address, user agent, referring page, site URL, and submitted content to evaluate spam or abuse. If comments and public forms remain disabled, visitor interaction with Akismet is limited.

Gravatar functionality may request an avatar or related asset from a Gravatar or Automattic domain. That request can transmit ordinary connection information such as an IP address, browser information, and the requested resource. Additional cookies may apply if a visitor is logged in to a related service.

5. Affiliate links and third-party cookies

When AGPS begins using affiliate links, a link may include a referral identifier. After a visitor follows the link, the affiliate network or destination site may set its own cookie or use another identifier to attribute a registration, purchase, or other qualifying action to AGPS. The third party—not AGPS—controls that technology and its retention period.

Visitors should review the destination site’s privacy and cookie disclosures. Blocking or deleting third-party cookies may prevent referral attribution but should not change the price offered unless the destination site expressly states otherwise.

Future-change rule: AGPS will revise this policy and its consent controls before intentionally activating an on-site advertising pixel, behavioral-advertising network, Google Analytics, embedded-media tracker, ecommerce system, or affiliate technology that materially changes visitor tracking.

6. Managing cookie choices

Where a cookie banner or settings control is available, visitors can use it to accept or reject supported nonessential cookies. A required cookie may still be used when reasonably necessary to deliver the requested service, protect the site, remember a privacy choice, or maintain an authenticated session.
